Alt Text (Alternative Text)

What is alt text?

Alt text (alternative text) is an HTML attribute that describes the content of an image. It is displayed when the image cannot load, is read by screen readers (accessibility), and helps Google understand what the graphic depicts.

Alt text and SEO

Google doesn't "see" images the way humans do — alt text is the primary way the search engine understands what a graphic represents. Well-described images can rank in Google Images and drive additional traffic.

How to write good alt text?

Describe what is in the image, not what you want to achieve. Be specific: "chart showing 200% organic traffic growth over 6 months" instead of "chart." Include keywords naturally, but avoid keyword stuffing. Decorative images can have an empty alt attribute (alt="").
