Backlink

What is a backlink?

A backlink (inbound link) is a hyperlink from another website pointing to your site. Google treats backlinks as "votes of confidence" — the more high-quality sites link to you, the higher your domain authority in the eyes of the search engine.

Why are backlinks important?

Backlinks are one of the three most important Google ranking factors, alongside content quality and search intent. A website with a strong link profile has significantly better chances of ranking high in search results.

Benefits of building a backlink profile:

  • Higher SERP positions — links pass authority (link equity / link juice) that strengthens the target page
  • Higher Domain Rating — Ahrefs metric measuring the strength of a domain's link profile
  • Faster indexing — Google discovers and indexes pages faster when they have links from already known websites
  • Referral traffic — backlinks from popular sites generate direct visitor traffic
  • Building credibility — links from authoritative sources strengthen E-E-A-T signals
  • AI visibility — language models (GEO) more frequently cite pages linked by many credible sources
