SSL/TLS Certificate
What is an SSL certificate?
An SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate — or more precisely, the newer TLS (Transport Layer Security) — is a digital certificate that encrypts the connection between the browser and the server. Sites with SSL use HTTPS and display a padlock icon in the address bar.
Types of SSL certificates
DV (Domain Validation) — basic, confirms domain ownership. Free from Let's Encrypt. OV (Organization Validation) — confirms the organization's identity. EV (Extended Validation) — the highest level of verification, displays the company name.
SSL and SEO
HTTPS is an official Google ranking factor. Sites without SSL display a "Not Secure" warning, which lowers trust and CTR. SSL is required for HTTP/2, forms, online payments, and Progressive Web Apps.
