What is topical authority?

Topical authority is a website's thematic authority — the degree to which Google and AI recognize your site as an expert on a given topic. A site with high topical authority ranks more easily for new keywords in its topic, is cited more often by AI, and builds a stronger E-E-A-T profile.

Building topical authority relies on creating comprehensive content clusters — a set of related articles covering a topic from every angle.

Why does it matter?

  • Easier rankings — new articles on a topic where you have authority rank faster
  • Algorithm resilience — Google changes its algorithm, but expert sites lose less
  • GEO — AI cites sources it perceives as experts on a topic
  • Snowball effect — every new article strengthens the entire cluster
  • Competitive advantage — it is hard to catch up with a site that has 50+ articles on a topic

How to build topical authority?

Hub & Spoke model

  1. Hub (pillar) — a main article covering the topic broadly (2,000+ words)
  2. Spoke (cluster) — detailed articles on subtopics (800–1,500 words)
  3. Internal linking — spokes link to the hub, the hub links to spokes, spokes link to each other

  • Hub: SEO basics — the complete guide
  • Spokes: SEO audit, technical SEO, on-page SEO, link building, keyword research...
  • Glossary: term definitions (SEO, backlink, SERP, meta tags...)

Best practices

  1. Cover the topic comprehensively — not 5 articles, but 20–30 covering every aspect
  2. Strong internal linking — each article should have 5–10 links to related content
  3. Regular publishing — Google values consistency, not a one-time burst
  4. Update existing content — fresh content signals activity
