Dwell time — what it is and how it affects SEO
What is dwell time?
Dwell time is the amount of time a user spends on a page after clicking a search result, before returning to the SERP. It is an unofficial metric — Google has never confirmed that it is a direct ranking factor, but a short dwell time (under 10 seconds) suggests the page does not answer the user's query.
Dwell time differs from bounce rate — bounce rate measures single-page visits regardless of time, while dwell time accounts for the time spent on the page.
Why does it matter?
- Quality signal — a long dwell time suggests to Google that the content matches the search intent
- Indirect ranking impact — while not an official factor, it correlates with higher positions
- Measurable UX indicator — helps evaluate whether content engages users
How to increase dwell time?
- Answer in the first paragraph — immediately give the user what they are looking for
- Engaging format — headings, lists, tables, and visuals break up walls of text
- Internal linking — links to related content encourage further reading
- Loading speed — a slow page (PageSpeed) causes an immediate return to SERP
- Match the intent — if someone is searching for a definition, provide a definition, not a sales landing page
