SEO for B2B companies

Nobody signs a six-figure contract from a single search result. Before a supplier reaches a shortlist, several people inside the buying organization have read about it, argued about it and compared it with two or three alternatives. B2B SEO is the discipline of being present, and useful, in every one of those moments.

Why generic SEO underperforms in B2B

Most search programs are built around volume. That instinct comes from consumer markets, where a broad head term and a conversion rate produce a predictable result. B2B does not behave that way. The phrase with the biggest number beside it is usually a definition query typed by a student, a competitor or an analyst — an audience that will never open a procurement process.

The phrases that matter describe a situation: a system being replaced, a regulation coming into force, a migration already approved internally. They are searched rarely, often by one person doing homework on behalf of a group, and they are where a supplier either enters the evaluation or never appears in it at all.

The second structural difference is the committee. The evaluation is not one person with one question but several people with different standards of proof, and a page that satisfies the technical evaluator can be useless to the person who has to justify the spend. Content that addresses only one of them stalls the deal at the first internal review. Which is why we treat search as a sales channel rather than a traffic channel: the measure of a B2B page is not how many people read it, but whether someone forwarded it to a colleague with the words "this answers your question".

How we build B2B search programs

Content mapped to the buying committee

A B2B decision is made by several people with incompatible questions. The technical lead wants architecture and integration limits, finance wants cost structure, procurement wants contract terms and references. We map topics to roles, so each of them finds a page written for them.

Decision-stage query selection

We prioritize phrases that describe a situation rather than a curiosity: 'supplier of', 'migration from', 'implementation cost', 'alternatives to'. Low volume, narrow intent, and a far shorter distance between the query and a sales conversation.

Sales-enablement assets that also rank

Comparison pages, methodology documents, implementation guides and calculators serve two audiences at once — organic search and the sales team forwarding a link mid-deal. One asset, two jobs.

Account and segment targeting

Rather than chasing a generic industry term, we build pages for the segments you actually sell into: company size, sector, regulatory context, existing tech stack. Fewer visitors, a much higher share of them in profile.

Reporting tied to inquiry quality

Search Console and analytics connected to what happens after the click: which entry pages precede an inquiry, which topics recur in first calls, and where the pipeline disagrees with the traffic chart.

Search and AI answers, treated as one surface

A shortlist is now assembled from two places. Part of it comes from classic results, part from an assistant asked to name credible suppliers in a category. The underlying requirement is the same in both: the page has to be parseable, attributable and specific enough to be worth quoting.

In practice that means structured data describing the organization, its services and its people; authors identified by name and credential rather than an anonymous house byline; sections that stand on their own when lifted out of the page; and at least some material — benchmarks, methodology, field observations — that does not already exist ten times elsewhere. The mechanism is described under generative engine optimization.

None of this is a lever that forces an engine to quote a source. It is the difference between being a candidate and not being in the running at all.
