Off-Page SEO
What is off-page SEO?
Off-page SEO encompasses all optimization activities performed outside your website that aim to increase its authority and search engine rankings. The most important element of off-page SEO is link building — acquiring backlinks from credible sources. It also includes brand mentions, social signals, and building online reputation.
While on-page SEO gives you full control over optimization, off-page SEO requires building relationships and creating content valuable enough that others will link to it on their own.
Why does it matter?
- Domain authority — backlinks are one of Google's three most important ranking factors
- Domain Rating — a strong link profile increases DR, supporting the ranking of all subpages
- Building trust — mentions in media and industry portals strengthen E-E-A-T signals
- Referral traffic — links from popular sites generate direct visitor traffic
- AI visibility — language models (GEO) more frequently cite pages linked by multiple sources
How does off-page SEO work?
Google treats backlinks as "votes of confidence." However, not all links carry the same weight:
- Source authority — a link from a DR 80 site is worth more than 100 links from DR 10 sites
- Topical relevance — a link from an industry-related site carries more weight
- Profile naturalness — a mix of anchor texts, sources, and link types
- Domain diversity — 10 links from 10 different domains > 10 links from one domain
Best practices
- Create linkable assets — reports, tools, calculators that others want to link to
- Guest posting — expert articles on industry portals
- Digital PR — expert commentary for media, citations in press articles
- Broken link building — finding broken links and proposing your content as a replacement
- Monitor mentions — unlinked brand mentions are an easy opportunity to earn a link
- Avoid manipulation — buying links and PBN farms can result in a Google penalty
